The drive belt turns the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump and, on many cars, the water pump. A cracked or stretched belt squeals, and if it snaps the car can lose charging and cooling. Along with the belt we check the pulleys and tensioner, because the squeal often comes from them. The cost depends on the car and access, so we quote it after inspection.

Frequently asked questions

How often should the drive belt be replaced?

Follow your car manufacturer’s schedule. Replace it sooner if the belt shows cracks or fraying, or if it squeals.

Can I drive if the belt squeals?

For short distances, yes, but don’t put it off. If the belt snaps, the alternator stops, and on cars where the belt drives the water pump the engine can overheat.

Why didn’t the squeal go away after replacing the belt?

Often it isn’t the belt squealing but a sticking pulley or a weak tensioner. That is why we check them together with the belt.
